| | | Savoir Faire Savoir Faire Newlyweds Share the Perspective They’ve Gained from Wedding-Day Hiccups. by Jessica Hilling Keil
Wait Out the Storm — Jennifer and Brandon Higgins, married June 28, 2008, at St. James Brethren Church Jennifer and Brandon expected their late-June wedding to be a day of sunshine and flowers. But when a mighty wind blew in torrents of rain, they started to question the old saying that rain on your wedding day is good luck! “The wind blew so hard that it knocked part of the sound system on my sister-in-law’s head as she was trying to steady it against the storm,” Jennifer recalls. “Really it was just awful, but when there is nothing you can do about it, you might as well just stay calm and wait it out. Obviously a wedding is a very detail oriented event; so if you’re the kind of person who wants to have things more controlled, don’t have it outdoors. Anything could blow up,” she says with a bit of irony. “When the storm was over, we all danced and ate cake just the same.”
Love Knows No Location — Joanna and Dave Haught, married Feb. 14, 2008, at Graceland Chapel in Las Vegas and May 3, 2008, at Old South Mountain Inn in Boonsboro Sometimes when things don’t go as planned, it’s not all bad. When Joanna and Dave Haught planned their wedding to be in Maryland, they had no idea that a career move to Las Vegas just before their nuptials would pose a problem. “Luckily we started looking for our wedding license ahead of time and found out that we could not get a Maryland license. It’s funny, people elope to Las Vegas, and we wanted to come back to all of our friends in Maryland for our marriage,” says Joanna. “It is where we met in high school and then met again years later. Instead we had a small intimate ceremony in Las Vegas with our children and family and then had our big event at the Old South Mountain Inn as we had planned. It turned out to be wonderful because it took all of the pressure off of us for the big wedding and we were able to have so much fun!”
Get By With A Little Help from Your Friends — Sarah and Sam Ginn, married June 7, 2008, at Greenstone Apostolic Church in Smithsburg “On our wedding day the weather was extremely hot and humid. One of our groomsmen must not have eaten well and was feeling a little jittery during the ceremony. As the vocalist sang The Lord’s Prayer, the groomsman dropped to his knees. Luckily my husband, myself and many of our friends are EMTs, and our friends just gracefully helped him out of the church,” Sarah says. “They gave us a nod that he was OK, and we proceeded with the ceremony. It’s really important to have your strongest and closest of friends with you on the day, [not just for sentimentality] but because things arise and it’s best to let them handle it as they come — from problems with the flowers to collapsing groomsmen. The bride and groom have so much to focus on, and that is what your good people are for.”
