History
History of Smithsburg
Founded in 1813 when Christopher “Stuffle” Smith purchased a plot of land formerly known as “part of Shadrack’s Lot,” Smithsburg was later incorporated in 1846. A settlement may have existed in the area as early as 1787. Many farmers moved into the area because of the rich, fertile soil, which yielded them abundant harvests. Although the agricultural role has diminished, farming and orchards are still important to Smithsburg and tie the town’s contemporary lifestyle to its humble beginnings.
Because of its proximity to South Mountain and Antietam, Smithburg played a role in the American Civil War, acting as a hospital town 1862. In fact, Confederate Gen. James Stuart and Union Gen. Kilpatrick exchanged artillery fire over the town. This connection with American history has therefore made Smithsburg a wonderful destination for history buffs of all ages. Next to Town Hall, The Smithsburg Town Museum gives visitors an informative glimpse into the town’s past with its fascinating Heritage Room, which is home to many of the area’s historic artifacts. |
